After two years spent nursing a pretty ugly knee injury, this summer I decided to lace up the Asics and start training again.
I've been relatively active since NWM2010, but not as dedicated or consistent as I'd like. Setting a date for my next race is going to get me back on track, or at least I hope so. I'm looking for a good event to do this spring... suggestions welcome!
Training again has proven challenging. I'm more determined than ever to run, but my body seems to be balking at the idea. Interval training is the name of the game right now, and while I started with a fancy app that would alert me every 90 seconds to run or walk, I've decided to go with what I like to call "song intervals," where I walk for two songs (to warm up), then run a song then walk a song and so on. This seems to be working better for me, because the beat (and the words, depending on what song is blaring through my earphones) really move me.
The most important lesson I learned two years ago from TNT was to appreciate my body, something that isn't easy when you've spent your whole life developing a hate/love/hate relationship with it. I just keep reminding myself - in the midst of a tough training session or even in the car when the steering wheel seems to mysteriously want to drift AWAY from the gym - that, while it may be a juicy one, my body is able and so is my mind, two gifts that I cannot deny and cannot take for granted. Thus the journey to run, continues!
